Strategi Politik Silang oleh People’s Action Party dalam Konteks Pengukuhan Politik di Singapura, 1954-1959
Abstract
The People's Action Party (PAP) is the main party that dominates Singapore's political landscape. The success of the party that dominates national politics until now is due to the 'early peg' done by the party's leaders in the early stages of its establishment in the 1950s. Based on the above, the PAP's plan to strengthen its political position is important to look at again to find out the strategy formulated by the party's main leadership, especially Lee Kuan Yew, Lim Chin Siong and Devan Nair. Among the PAP's most effective strategies in the early stages of its emergence in Singapore politics was the cross political strategy. This strategy cemented the PAP's position on Singaporean politics for a long decade. This study uses primary sources obtained from the National Archive Singapore and the National Archive, Kew as the main source for writing the study. The findings of this study summarize the main strategy carried out by the PAP to control the voters, including the Malay voters, through crossover politics planned by the party. The dominance of Malay voters in Singapore further complements voter support for the PAP, allowing the party to dominate politics in this country. In addition, the findings of the study show the effectiveness of cross political strategies against parties involved in electoral competition, especially for countries with multiracial populations such as Singapore and Malaysia.
