Abstract

In recent times, a paradigm shift in education is beyond visible. A learning management system (LMS) is one of the technological platforms that functions as course materials management with the intention to promote communication between learners and teachers. Nevertheless, the issues of user retention, engagement, usability, and efficiency within LMS still exist. A sequential-exploratory mixed-method study is utilized in this study to find out current LMS’s design effectiveness and its impact if LMS is designed through Gamification Learning Framework. Research data was gathered from 117 students through surveys and series of interviews were done to 8 educators with aim at understanding the extent of the use of LMS and how gamification can be used to augment the user experience, motivation, and learning process. The results of the present needs analysis suggest strong need for a gamified LMS environment in English learning. This study further presents detailed recommendations for LMS development and stresses the need to be oriented at learners’ needs supporting variety of the learning process and aiming for high retention of learners. Some recommendations are the use of gamification elements that enhance the feeling of progress such as points, badges, progress bar and leaderboard as well as collaboration in learning process through LMS, including addressing technical issues to ensure gamified features work as intended.
