Konflik Semiotik dan Simbolik dalam Hubungan Ibu dan Anak Perempuan dalam Filem Seram Kontemporari Melayu: Kajian Kes Filem Senjakala (The Conflicts Between the Semiotic and the Symbolic in the Mother-Daughter Relationship in Malay Contemporary Horror Films: A Case Study film Senjakala)

Abstract

ABSTRACT

Contemporary Malay horror films indirectly illustrate the conflict between mothers and daughters as a representation of the conflict between the semiotic and symbolic. This conflict often occurs in the relationship between mother and daughter in a horror movie narrative. Various studies have been done on women characters in horror films in Malaysia. However, a few emphasize the conflict of these linguistic realms in mother-daughter relationships. Thus, this article will examine the conflicts between the semiotic and symbolic in a mother and daughter relationship within contemporary Malay horror films using Senjakala (2011) directed by Ahmad Idham as a case study. Adopting the Feminist Psychoanalysis Theory, especially the concept of Abjection highlighted by Julia Kristeva (1982), textual analysis method is used to unravel the conflicts between the semiotic and symbolic in mother-daughter relationship. The analysis found that the film was trying to escape from the traditional notion of patriarchal ideology that everything in the world is stable and manageable. The conflict in the realms of semiotic and symbolic is able to empower the women characters and challenge patriarchal ideology. The conflicts of the semiotic and symbolic in this film prove that patriarchal ideology is not as stable as it seemed.
