Abstract

Tahun 1970-an hingga 1980-an adalah jangkamasa yang mencabar buat Angkatan Belia Islam Malaysia (ABIM).

The Angkatan Belia Islam Malaysia (ABIM) As Non-Partisan Movements (1970s to 1980s): A critical Analysis

The 1970s to 1980s were a challenging time for the Malaysian Islamic Youth Forces (ABIM). The principles of their non-partisan struggle seem to be challenged by some of the developments that are still being discussed up to now. This article discussess three developments of the 1970s and 1980s that sought to ‘thwart’ the ABIM non-partisan image at that time. Assessment was made to identify whether the principle of non-partisan struggle moves in practice? The discussion was conducted using the first source obtained from the National Archives of Malaysia and also a second source, as well as supported by interviews with former ABIM Information Chief (1976-1982) and former ABIM president (1983-1991), Dato ‘Dr. Siddiq Fadhil. The study  views that it is important not only to understand ABIM’s non-partisan principle, but also to see whether ABIM, as an influential da’wah movement in Malaysia is playing its role independently, or is influenced by certain partisan sentiments as alleged by some.
