Puisi-puisi Zaharah Nawawi dalam ‘Warna dan Wajah’ sebagai Alat untuk Model Pengajaran Komunikatif di dalam Kelas (Zaharah Nawawi’s Poems in ‘Warna dan Wajah’ as a Communicative Language Teaching Model in the Class)

Abstract

ABSTRACT: The Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) approach that Noam Chomsky coined in 1957 emphasizes communication and the ability to capture and understand ‘the meaning’ in language teaching and learning (PdP). This approach later became popular and was widely used in English language teaching. One of the ways to sharpen communication skills in learning this language is to teach poetry in that particular language. This approach can be used in the PdP Malay language. In this regard, Zaharah Nawawi’s poems in her collection ‘Warna dan Wajah’ is suggested as a CLT tool. It is because Zaharah Nawawi’s poems are not so tricky and direct, emphasizing iconic signs and avoiding playing too much with the symbols. One of the ways to utilize Zaharah’s poetry is to recite it to achieve perlocutionary purposes, discuss its content, or write poems inspired by the existing ones. It seems that Zaharah Nawawi’s publisher realizes the strength of her work as ‘poems that are highly communicative’.

Keywords: Zaharah Nawawi; CLT; poetry in class; communication poetry; icon sign; symbol sign; aesthetics; perlocutionary
