Abstract

ABSTRACT

An experiment was conducted to investigate the strategy and the process used by decision makers to solve Multi Criteria Decision Problems using a Decision Support System. In this experiment, subjects were given a task where they were required to obtain all the necessary information and used the information evalutlon in the decision making process using a software developed specially for the expertment. Sixty-four universlty students volunteered as subject and they were asked to play the role of an admission officer of a university. The task was to assess twenty hypothetical profiles of candidates seekingg admission to a university and to make decision as to whether to accept or to reject the candidates. The research findings showed that (1) all data were not utilized for a decision-making task involving multiple critena: (2) subjects actions on data acquisition were guided by their cognitive preference of the attributes; I.e., the attribute which was perceived: as most important was accessed first followed by the next important attribute and so on; (3) the data acquisition directIOn was by attributes; and (4) there was no specific directIOn for the evaluation process.
