Abstract

Commitment is crucial in a marriage to ensure the longevity of the relationship. Marrying a bisexual male or another non-heterosexual spouse might present unique challenges, particularly in a conservative country such as Malaysia. In Malaysian society, strong socio-cultural and religious forces significantly impact the commitment of married bisexual men to stay in their marriages. This study aims to investigate the intricate factors affecting the commitment level of bisexual husbands to their marital relationships. Using a qualitative research approach, in-depth interviews were conducted with 15 bisexual husbands who are currently married. The study results indicated that love for their wives, caring for their children, hope for change, internal religious motivation, upholding family honour, and avoiding social stigma are key elements contributing to maintaining commitment in these marriages. The implications of this study are significant for enhancing awareness of the issues related to commitment in marriages with bisexual husbands. The insights gained can guide the development of culturally sensitive interventions and support systems. Additionally, the study contributes to advancing the discussion on various sexual identities within committed partnerships, fostering inclusion, and improving the well-being of individuals navigating these dynamics in Malaysia.
