Abstract

Abstract: The youth are the valuable assets of the country and they are the successors of the current leaders for the future. They are the pillars who will determine the progress of the country in the years to come. Accordingly, the objective of this study was to understand the expectation and aspirations of the youth towards national leaders and their relationship with their political involvement. In this study, the strength of the relationships of their aspirations in encouraging their involvement in politics was assessed. A quantitative method was employed, using questionnaires as the research instrument. This study involved a total of 455 respondents, aged between 15 and 39 years old, from various backgrounds. The location of this study was in Marang district, Terengganu. The frequency analysis of this study found the youth's aspirations to the government to be very high, and their political tendencies very positive. The correlation between their aspirations and their political involvement was found to be significant and positive, with a value of .513**, which is at a moderate level. This shows that, contesting parties which prioritise on the aspirations of the youth will be preferred by the youth to be voted for. On the other hand, parties which fail to meet the aspirations of the youth will be rejected. It was revealed that, the failure to meet the aspirations of the youth was a factor in the defeat of the Barisan Nasional government which had ruled Malaysia for 60 years. The conclusion from the findings of this study is that the youth will reject parties that do not benefit them and they will support parties and leaders who are believed to capable in fulfilling their aspirations. Based on the findings of this study, there are other factors which also influence the political involvement of the youth, especially in suburban areas. Therefore, a more detailed study should be done in future research.
