Abstract

Abstract: Wetland is an ecosystem rich in biodiversity, habitat diversity and balances the natural cycle of the ecosystem. This role provides direct and indirect benefits to humans, also known as ecosystem services. However, Paya Indah Wetlands (PIW), a well-known wetland area in Malaysia, is located within the rapid development of urbanization and is very vulnerable to the impact of development and pollution. Therefore, a study was conducted to see the target group's understanding of the ecosystem services available at PIW, namely staff and visitors. This study uses a qualitative approach, and data is obtained from interviews with four informants and focus group discussions with four other informants. The study data were analyzed using thematic analysis. The study found that all informants know the types of ecosystem services offered by PIW to humans. The theme developed is direct food production as a provisioning service, while regulating services include climate control, flood mitigation and wildlife habitat. Cultural services are identified as ecotourism, education, and conservation-based research. Meanwhile, supporting services include the function of water catchment areas, carbon sequestration and storage, providing habitat and food sources for wild animals. The results of this study can provide recent knowledge about the informant's level of understanding of the concept of ecosystem services that has been and is being applied in the existing management of PIW. Suggestions for improved management based on ecosystem services in wetland areas, especially in PIW, are vital and adopted by stakeholders to preserve the country's natural heritage.
