Pengaruh Trauma Kanak-Kanak, Penghindaran Sosial dan Harapan terhadap Idea Membunuh Diri dalam Kalangan Pelajar Sarjana Muda di Bangi dan Kuala Lumpur (The Influence of Childhood Trauma, Social Avoidance and Hope on Suicidal Ideation Among Undergraduate Students in Bangi and Kuala Lumpur)
Abstract
Abstract: Mental health issues and suicidal ideation have become increasingly concerning worldwide, particularly among adolescents and young adults, with university students being a high-risk group due to various academic and social pressures. This study aimed to examine the influence of childhood trauma, social avoidance, and hope on suicidal ideation among undergraduate students at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Bangi and Kuala Lumpur. A total of 168 students were selected through simple random sampling and completed a set of questionnaires comprising the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire - Short Form (CTQ-SF), Social Avoidance and Distress Scale (SADS), Hope Scale (HS), and Self-Rating Idea of Suicide Scale (SIOSS). Data were analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistics with SPSS and JAMOVI. Findings revealed that childhood trauma and social avoidance had significant effects on suicidal ideation, whereas hope served as a protective factor. Only ethnicity showed significant differences in levels of suicidal ideation, while gender and socioeconomic status did not. In conclusion, the study highlights the need for more psychosocially focused interventions for university students to prevent the rising incidence of suicide and to promote their mental well-being. Future research should further explore these variables in greater depth or incorporate additional factors to enhance understanding of suicidal ideation in the Malaysian context.
