Abstract

The presence of ASEAN students in the higher learnings in Malaysia is of great benefits to the tourism industry. It is assumed that during their study and stay in the country, the tendencies of travelling domestically do contribute to the spatial travel pattern and behavior. This article discusses about the travel pattern and behaviour of ASEAN students while studying in Malaysia, including motivation, travel behaviour and patterns of their family and friends. Based on a case study carried out in Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, and a snowball method and face-face interviews of 56 respondents, the results show that travel domestically had been part of the students experience while studying in Malaysia. Most of the students travelled to explore new places, vacation time, have fun and sightseeing, visiting relatives and others. Students were more likely to choose nature-based attractions such as beaches, islands and mountains. The findings suggest that enhancing ASEAN travel domestically and regionally can help promote understanding of the community of the host country and their ASEAN friends. The study proposed a special ASEAN students travel incentive to be given and extended to the students as well as their families.
