MONITORING OF BLACK SOLDIER FLY, Hermetia illucens (L.) (DIPTERA: STRATIOMYIDAE) POPULATION IN SEMI-CAPTIVE CONTROLLED CONDITIONS

Mohamad Ibrahim Mohamad Isa, Hadura Abu Hasan

Abstract

Black soldier fly, Hermetia illucens (Diptera: Stratiomyidae) recently distributed in many parts of the world including Malaysia. Black soldier fly has been associated with decaying organic matter such as animal waste or plant material. This species was found near poultry facilities in Tasek Gelugor, Penang, Malaysia and further introduced in semi-captive controlled-conditions adult cages (2 m width x 4 m length x 2.5 m height) for the establishment of the colony. The population of this species was monitored for 10 months. The population of black soldier fly increased but subsequently fluctuated over the months. The weight of black soldier fly eggs, temperature and relative humidity were recorded. Spearman’s correlation was performed to determine the relationship between climatic factors and the weight of eggs. There was a significant difference in eggs weight between the months, Kruskal Wallis test, H (9) = 133.37, P < 0.05. No correlation was found between the eggs weight and both climatic factors (temperature and humidity). Other possible factors affecting the number of eggs laid such as adult population density and light intensity were also discussed.
