Abstract

Geography Information System (GIS) has helped many people to overcome various problems encountered in the spaces they inhabit. However, GIS has not yet been introduced to Malaysian secondary schools with a variety of reasons such as the lack of ICT infrastructure and human resources. The aim of this study is to identify the potential to integrate GIS into secondary school geography lessons in rural Smart School in Sabah, which is well known for having most conducive ICT equipment in the country. This study applies mixed method model. The quantitative and qualitative data gathers from a set of survey questions and a semi structured interview. The purposive sampling method applies to select rural Secondary Smart School in Sabah. Four geography teachers from each school were selected randomly for an interview. The findings indicate that an increased number of computer labs, ICT equipment, computer and technical staff provide a relatively bright opportunity to integrate GIS in teaching geography in rural Smart School. The result from interview showed that there are some constraints such as lack of GIS software, human resources, reference materials and curriculum of geography that prevent the integration of GIS in teaching Geography.
