Abstract

Abstract: Strategic health promotion intervention planning focused on the needs and demands of youth is seen as an approach to improve self-care in mental health practices. This study aims to identify the challenges, strategies, frameworks, difficulties, and quality of life in accessing mental services through digital applications for youth school leavers. A systematic review using the electronic literature databases PubMed and Scopus was searched from 1 Jan 2018 to 31 Dec 2023 using PRISMA-ScR based on the youth population (P), the concept of mobile applications (C), mental health promotion as a context (C), and quality of life as the output (O). The selection criteria were: the ability to access full journal articles in English or Malay languages, focusing on digital applications of mental health promotion intervention and from original research. The review was summarized into knowledge gaps, strategies, and intervention frameworks. A total of 15 articles met the inclusion criteria and were appraised for quality using the MMAT checklist. The current youth generation prefers to get information using interactive self-empowerment online and has been exposed since school. However, the promotion of mental health using mobile applications is limited in Malaysia. Many references are available abroad that can be adapted to the socio-culture of Malaysians. Therefore, a digital application promotion approach to curb the mental health crisis among youth in Malaysia needs is timely to be developed and tested for implementation suitability.
