Abstract

Abstract: The advancement of technology has had a negative impact of student involvement in community activities. Limited studies on the effects of participation in volunteer activities have led to a lack of awareness of the benefits gained through volunteerism. Therefore, a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) was conducted in this study by focusing on the impact of volunteering program participation among university students in Malaysia. The databases used consisted of Scopus, Web of Science (WOS), MyCite and Google Scholar. The articles selected were based on the years 2021 to 2025 with the selection of articles guided by the ROSES (Reporting Standards for Systematic Evidence Syntheses) protocol. A total of 13 journal articles were selected based on established criteria. The themes that emerged from this review consisted of six themes: personal development, leadership development, human development, social awareness and civic responsibility, self-reliance and positive personal values. Through this systematic literature review, readers-particularly students and relevant stakeholders can learn about the impact of student involvement in volunteer activities. Student engagement in volunteerism certainly contributes positively to personal development, in line with the progress of today’s technological world.
