Kecenderungan Cubaan Membunuh Diri dalam Kalangan Klien Gay dan Lesbian: Pengalaman Kaunselor (The Tendency of Suicide Attempts among Gay and Lesbian Clients: Counselor’s Experience)

Abstract


Isu cubaan membunuh diri semakin menular dalam kalangan masyarakat disebabkan tekanan hidup yang melampau. Isu-isu cubaan membunuh diri ini juga melibatkan golongan gay dan lesbian. Golongan muda yang terlibat dalam hubungan sejenis mempunyai kecenderungan cubaan bunuh diri disebabkan faktor persekitaran, gangguan mental, tekanan dan kemurungan. Kajian kes ini bertujuan untuk menyiasat kecenderungan membunuh diri dalam kalangan gay dan lesbian dari perspektif enam kaunselor berdaftar yang mempunyai pengalaman mengendalikan sesi kaunseling dengan klien gay dan lesbian yang mempunyai kecenderungan cubaan membunuh diri. Kajian ini menggunakan temubual separa berstruktur bagi mengumpul data. Data kajian dianalisis dengan cara meneliti trankripsi rakaman temu bual dan mengenal pasti tema yang muncul berdasarkan objektif kajian dengan bantuan program NVIVO 11. Dapatan kajian menunjukkan bahawa faktor persekitaran, kemurungan dan konflik dalaman diri menjadi faktor utama kepada kecenderungan membunuh diri dalam kalangan gay dan lesbian. Dapatan kajian ini memberi gambaran tentang amalan kaunseling gay dan lesbian di Malaysia, serta mengimplikasikan bahawa kaunselor termasuk guru bimbingan dan kaunseling di sekolah perlu turut berpengetahuan dalam isu-isu kecenderungan bunuh diri dalam golongan gay dan lesbian bagi membolehkan mereka menangani isu tersebut dengan lebih berkesan.

The issue of suicide attempts is increasing among the society due to extremely stressful lifestyle. This issue is also involving gays and lesbians. Young people involved in homosexual relationships has a tendency to be suicidal due to environmental factors, mental disorders, stress and depression. This case study aimed to investigate the likelihood of suicide among gays and lesbians from the perspective of six registered counselors who had experience handling counseling sessions with suicidal gay and lesbian clients. This study used a semi-structured interview to collect data. Data were analyzed by examining interview recording transcripts and identifying emerging themes based on the objectives of the study using NVIVO 11 software. Results show that environmental factor, depression and internal conflicts are key factors of suicide tendencies among gays and lesbians. This study provides a picture of gays and lesbians counselling practice in Malaysia, as well as implicates that counsellors including guidance and counselling teachers in school should also be knowledgeable in suicidal issues involving gays and lesbians to enable them to better address the issue more effectively.
