Abstract

ABSTRACT

Suicidal intent is a thought or a desire to end one’s own life. This study investigates the knowledge and understanding of college students on the intention to commit suicide. This qualitative study used interviews to gather the required information. Seven students who had been identified as having a desire to commit suicide through a personal profile form participated in this study. Data collected was analyzed by NVivo8 software. The findings showed that respondents had knowledge and understanding of the intent to commit suicide. They also indicated that the intention to commit suicide exists since when they were in secondary schools. In general, this study found that the external and internal stress factors encouraged the respondents to have the intention to commit suicide. The study also found that respondents had negative attitudes toward suicidal behavior. Respondents also reported that they had their own solutions when dealing with problems. This understanding could help counselors to plan strategies in helping college students to deal with their problems and to prevent them from committing suicide to solve their problems.
